The imperial tomb of Emperor Shōmu

The imperial tomb of Emperor Shōmu

The Southern imperial tomb on Mt. Saho (the imperial tomb of Emperor Shōmu) is located to the north from the Saho River, to the southwest from Mt. Tamon and north of Nara City (Hōren-chō, Nara City). It is said that the eastern imperial tomb on Mt. Saho located northeast of the imperial tomb of Emperor Shōmu is a tomb of Queen Kōmyōshi (Queen Kōmyō), who was the queen of Emperor Shōmu (701-760: the period of reign 724-749). After Emperor Shōmu passed away, Mikenji Temple was founded as a guardian temple below the mound to protect his tomb. When Matsunaga Hisahide (1510-1577) built Tamon castle on Mt. Tamon in 1560, he invaded the imperial tomb of Emperor Shōmu and destroyed the tomb of Queen Kōmyō.
